In 2022, Jack founded The Listening Project. A dynamic mixed-instrumentation ensemble committed to the innovative and demystifying presentation of contemporary and experimental music(s).

The group has delivered a wide range of performances in London at venues such as Avalon Cafe, The George Tavern,  Morocco Bound Bookshop, and The Old Church Stoke Newington, where the group were ensemble in residence in 2023. Jack used the residency to feature the work of wandelweiser composer Jürg Frey, also programming works by Linda Buckley, Laurence Crane, Julius Eastman, Aileen Sweeney, Sally Beamish and more.

In March of 2024, The Listening Project collaborated with Turner-Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller in a performance of his Acid House Concept Piece, Acid Brass, drawing hundreds of people to their pop-up performance in a gallery in South East London.

Often, the term ‘new music’ can have people running for cover. There’s a great book by the author David Stubbs called Fear of Music: Why People Get Rothko But Don’t Get Stockhausen, which questions why you can have so many people wandering around Tate Modern embracing avant-garde and experimental art but by contrast, the same audience can often be more resistant to New Music.

The Listening Project aims to break down those barriers and fears around the performance of New Music.

In an age where accountability is being placed on our industries to represent society even more (rightfully so), it seems a no brainer that if we want to diversify our art form, we need to prioritise performing music by living composers, in new innovative ways, to all kinds of audiences at more imaginative venues.
